Well, I'm a little behind the times getting all this typed up. I guess that's what I get when I teach preschool while I have my house under construction, have my son's birthday, and start a new calling all in one week. Hopefully it's all a better late than never proposition. :)
Christopher Columbus is a topic I've taught many times before and we had a great time learning all about his exciting discoveries. We got started off after our fairly loud and exuberant circle time by watching this short video on YouTube. It's a little cheesy and dated, and not PC by any stretch, but it was a fun way to get the discussion started.
Afterward we got on our sailing gear (newspaper sailing hats and paper telescopes) and sailed to America in our high tech boat (me pulling them on a blanket on the hard wood floors).
They had a fabulous time sailing around the house looking out for America and my floors have never been cleaner.

After all that hard work sailing we decided it was time for a little sailor's snack, so we got right to work making...these cute little apple ships made of apple slices, stick pretzels for the mast, and fruit roll-up sails.
A closer look at their handiwork...
With all that hard work exploring the ocean blue and building ships it didn't take long for them to dig right into their snacks...
and soon it was off for a little play-time. I heard a lot of looking for America comments and saw several mini-boat rides given, so something must have sunk in at least a little.
After play time we got to work finding the letter "C" on our worksheet. The kids were quite good at this task and I think it's very valuable in helping them recognize subtle differences between letters.
After that we started ripping our paper into square shapes, so that they could glue their boats together. For future reference I recommend making the background on cardstock and the tearing paper on light weight paper. They had a hard time tearing the cardstock I used. I ending up getting each tear started for them. The gluing part they adored!
Most of the kids took a little more of a Picasso approach...
Next we had a very quick lunch time while I taught them the "Columbus Sailed the Ocean Blue" song and moms started showing up before we knew it. All in all, it was a loud but exciting day learning all about Christopher Columbus in preschool.
If your kids are walking around singing the song, here it is for you to sing along with them ( to the tune of "Mary Had a Little Lamb":

Columbus sailed the ocean blue in fourteen ninety two. ♫
